Karma at the World Juniors

Jan. 10, 2012

Here is a letter I received from an AMHA Member about their experience at the WJHC this past December/January.  I wanted to share it!

Greg Wing

Hey Greg,

Thanks again for all your work with AMHA and especially with the World Juniors.

The name of our 2012 Juniors story would be (Do you believe in Karma?÷

Our entire family went to the Switzerland vs Slovakia game on December 31st. Myself and out boys Mitchell 12 and Nick 8 were sitting on one side of the rink and my wife Franca and daughters Shan and Olivia were sitting on the other side of the Saddledome. Just prior to the start of the 3rd period, I said to Mitchell that I had a good feeling that a puck was going to come over the glass our way. He simply said (I don¦t think so.÷ Part way through the 3rd, sure enough a puck deflected softly out of play and was caught by a young man one row down and about 5 seats over from us. I said to Mitchell, (Oh well, pretty close, eh Bud?÷

The young man then turned around and pointed at my son Nick and motioned for us to pass the puck down to hima. Whata??? We thanked him very much and Nick went over to say Thank You as well. After the game, we introduced ourselves to (Joel÷ (did not get his last name) and asked why he did such a great thing. He simply said that he remembered his first Flames game as a kid where he got an errant puck and how good it felt. Since Nick was having such a great time, he thought it would be a nice thing to do.

A few moments later, a hard puck flies just past Franca¦s head on the other side of the rink narrowly missing the girls and hitting the seats directly behind them. Wow, we nearly got TWO pucks that day.

Now that in itself is a pretty cool story, but wait; it gets bettera..

As we were leaving the Saddledome and heading down Olympic Way, Franca notices a $20 Bill on the sidewalk, and decides she needs to find the rightful owner. Reallya in a crowd of about 18,000 people you are going to find the right person?? Oh well, that¦s just the way she is. She does this stuff all the time.

She asks the first person walking in front of us whether he dropped a $20, and honestly, he replied that it was not his. She moves on the next person ahead of him, and asks the same question. Sure enough, this young fellow had just pulled out his cell phone and the money had popped out of his pocket. As she hands him the money, I realize that it is none other than Joel, the generous young man that had just given his puck away to Nick. Now remember that Franca had been sitting on the other side of the rink and was not even aware of Nick getting the puck until after the game.

I believe that when you do something good for someone else, it always comes back to you, just not always as quickly as in Joel¦s case. Thanks to AMHA for doing so much good for so many in the Airdrie hockey community.

This is a memory that our family will have forever thanks to the generosity of AMHA and others involved with the IIHF WJH Organization.

Thanks,

Jamie Broughton and the Broughton Family
